A headteacher has hit back at Ofsted, arguing their latest report does not accurately reflect the school’s achievements.

The report for Bocking Church Street Primary School, published in September, rated the school as requiring improvement.

Following their visit in July, inspectors rated the school Good for behaviour and safety of pupils but Requires Improvement for achievement of pupils, quality of teaching and leadership and management.

Inspectors said pupils’ progress in Key Stage one and in Key Stage two maths was “not yet good” and work was not always set at the right difficulty for pupils.

The report also states there is too much inconsistency in progress between classes in English and maths, brighter pupils were not challenged and school leaders did not check performance rigorously.

Head Rosalind Welch believes the report was impersonal and failed to reflect the positives of her school, which currently caters for 203 five to 11-year-olds.

She said: “We are not a failing school - there’s a lovely atmosphere, positive staff and supportive parents.

“Parents don’t bother with Ofsted reports anymore, they are not front-page stories in the news.

“The report is a snapshot in time - we had a little drop in Key Stage 1 but the report doesn’t say it like that.

“Ofsted have put a dampener on things but we are very resilient and forward-looking.”
