Witham Town captain Simon Glover admits their players need to be switched on mentally to make sure they meet their full potential in Ryman League division north this year.

It has been a tough campaign for Witham so far as they continue to rebuild after dropping down from the premier division last year and then seeing almost all of their squad make departures from the Village Glass Stadium.

Witham head to Soham Town Rangers today sitting 17th in the division north table after a 3-0 win against Redbridge in midweek and last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Romford.

Glover thinks that position in the standings isn’t a fair reflection of where Witham deserve to be with the talent they have in within their squad.

Keeping a clean sheet against Redbridge was a big step forward after the disappointment of seeing a three-goal lead wiped out against Romford, but mistakes need to be cut out if Witham are to reach the place in the table where they really deserve to be.

Glover said: “I think it is a false position that we’re in.

“It’s certainly not a position that we’ll be in for long as we will pick points up.

“I’m not concerned.

“But things still need to gel a bit more and there are young lads who do still need to learn, but it’s a mental thing and it’s all about needing to switch on in the mind.

“Attributes-wise, we have some talented people in there, but it is in the mind and knowing how to see things out when we get ourselves in the position to do that.

“There is definitely a growing belief and a team spirit there but people need to make sure they are always switched on mentally.”

Glover has come to Witham this season after a spell working under Town assistant boss Alan Kimble at Maldon and Tiptree last season.

The experienced former Thamesmead and Hornchurch player was handed the captain’s armband following the departure of Lewis Godbold a few weeks ago and said it is a role he is enjoying.

“It’s a responsibility, but I’ve had the fortune to be assistant manager and captain before in my career,” he added. “I’m honoured to be Witham’s captain and be thought of in that way.

“I just try to encourage everyone to have a voice and be positive so they can get the best out of themselves.” Following Saturday’s trip to Soham Town Rangers in Ryman League division north, Witham are due to head to Chelmsford City in the fourth round of the Essex Senior Cup on Monday.
