HOLLAND FC joint-boss Glenn Cowen has admitted being delighted with his side’s impressive start to the new Thurlow Nunn League season.

The coastal club began their division one campaign – their first-ever at step six level – with an eye-catching 2-0 success at Debenham LC on Saturday.

And they were unlucky not to pocket three more points at home to Cornard United on Tuesday night, instead drawing 0-0.

Cowen, who runs the side with Rob Batten, felt his side had more than enough chances to win at the Rush Green Bowl.

But he was still satisfied to take four points from the two matches.

“We hit the bar three times and had plenty of chances on Tuesday night,” said Cowen.

“We should have won and we were unfortunate not to get another victory.

“With a bit of luck, we would have done but a point is a point.

“If someone had offered me four points and two clean sheets from our opening matches I certainly would have taken it.”

While disappointed not to score, Cowen was delighted to keep another clean sheet.

“Cornard were well-organised and we defended well," he said.

“The midfield worked hard, too, and the fact we haven’t conceded yet is very pleasing, given that we didn’t keep a clean sheet throughout pre-season.

“(Goalkeeper) Luke (Banner) didn’t have a save to make, which shows how well protected he was.

“And that was despite giving a lot of corners away.”

Elsewhere in division one, COGGESHALL TOWN have made a flying start to their first-ever Thurlow Nunn League campaign.

The side, who, like Holland, were promoted from the Essex and Suffolk Border League last season, drew 1-1 at March Town United in their first division curtain-raiser on Saturday.

And they followed it up with a stunning 4-1 victory at AFC Sudbury Reserves on Tuesday night.

BRAINTREE TOWN RESERVES have also played two matches - and won them both.

They triumphed 3-2 at home to Leiston Reserves on Saturday and then 3-0 at Needham Market Reserves on Saturday.

Division one side HALSTEAD TOWN set up an FA Cup preliminary round tie against Thurrock after beating Newmarket Town 2-1.

The match was originally due to take place on Sunday but had to be abandoned due to a serious injury to one of the Jockeys' players.

In the premier division, STANWAY ROVERS drew 0-0 at Long Melford while FC CLACTON had a night to forget, crashing to an 8-0 defeat at Felixstowe and Walton.
